SEM / SEO – I thought they were the same?
Well they are , kind of!
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is closley related to SEO in terms of it is a process to drive traffic to your website by one means or another, by means of improving the websites ranking -both paid and unpaid. The ultimate goal of SEM is increasing targeted traffic to your website and acheiving more conversions.
The most common SEM is PPC or Pay-Per-Click.
Pay Per Click
These are the listings you will see at the right hand of the page when performing a search for a given keyword or combination of keywords.
It has been sad that whilst 65% of people never click on the right hand column Paid listings, 35% do – so therefore this may be well worth considering when evaluating how you plan to market your website.
In Pay-Per-Click – you create an account with the Search Engine (Google Adwords for example) of your choice and then set a daily or weekly budget for your PPC campaign. Each time a user clicks on your link ( the order of the links is determined by your bid for the keywords of choice) – you will be chaged a fee. This fee can be anything from a few pence to a few pounds depending on the poplularity of the Keyword – ie- the keyword “mobile phones” would be very expensive as there are many , many big players in this arena with large budgets to spend!
This can also be a bit of a minefield as Google in particular can order the ads based on the following:
- Amount of bid Paid by the Advertiser
- The popularity of the advert
- The quality of the page that the ad leads to
